Broadband Speed Checker

What do your speed checker results mean?

There's more to broadband than just speed. Our speed checker measures the 'Download', 'Upload', 'Ping' and 'Jitter', find out what they mean below.

What is 'download'?

The standard measurement used by the industry today. Measured by the amount of data (megabits) downloaded per second (megabits per second or Mbps). 1,000 megabits equal 1 gigabit (1Gb). The higher the download speed the more data you can download per second. This is important if you download large files or have multiple devices using the same connection.

What is 'upload'?

Also measured in Mbps, 'upload' speed is the time it takes to transfer data from your device to another source, for example using YouTube to upload or live stream videos or sharing work files with colleagues on Teams. One of the benefits to a full fibre connection is the ability to provide symmetrical download and upload speeds.

What is 'ping'?

The amount of time (in milliseconds or ms) it takes for a piece of data to be sent from your device to a server and back again. It's an important indicator of how much delay (or ‘lag’) you will experience when performing tasks online that rely on two-way data transfer, for example, online gaming, general online responsiveness of websites etc.

What is 'jitter'?

The delay in sending data over your broadband connection. Like ‘ping’ it is measured in milliseconds (ms), but rather than taking a one-off measurement, ‘jitter’ measures the consistency of the delay. A high ‘jitter’ rate is a good indicator of ‘congestion’ across your broadband providers connection and will result in poor video and audio experiences.
