CityFibre, the UK’s largest independent full fibre platform, has completed the primary-build of its full fibre network in Slough. The new network is now 'ready for service’ for almost 42,000 homes, about 80% of residential properties and most businesses in the town. Slough is the latest completed location in CityFibre’s nationwide rollout making it one of the best-connected locations in the country.

Construction began on the project in October 2020 and CityFibre has since laid almost 500km of dense full fibre infrastructure across the town, more than two and a half times the length of the M25. While the primary-build is now completed, CityFibre will continue to explore opportunities to reach further areas including new build properties, those on private or unadopted roads and business parks.

Residents in Slough can now enjoy affordable, gigabit-capable, and reliable full fibre broadband from a range of internet service providers (ISPs) including launch partner Vodafone, TalkTalk, Giganet and Zen. CityFibre’s network currently supports download and upload speeds of up to 2.5Gbps and is capable of supporting symmetrical speeds of up to 10Gbps in the future.

An economic impact report by the consultancy Hatch, commissioned by CityFibre, found Slough stands to experience significant economic, social and environmental benefits from its new digital infrastructure platform, including over £487m in productivity and innovation gains and £107m from a widened workforce over a 15-year period. Enabling 5G rollout alone could drive up to £1bn in positive economic impact.

Neil Madle, Partnership Manager at CityFibre, said: “We’re thrilled that our primary-build in Slough is now complete, making the town one of the best-connected places in the UK. Tens of thousands of homes and businesses in Slough now have access to lightning-fast and highly reliable connectivity, unlocking heaps of economic opportunities for the town. We look forward to watching Slough reap these benefits.”

Tan Dhesi, MP for Slough, said: “After discussing its importance for our town and having publicly supported this initiative, with visits to the CityFibre office and worksites, great to hear they have now completed their primary build in Slough. This will give residents and local businesses access to the best available digital connectivity, which we know is vital in today’s world. It’s fantastic that Slough is once again ahead of the curve, standing ready to thrive in the digital age, equipped with full fibre.”
