CityFibre provides a secure, cost effective, high performing dark fibre infrastructure for Dundee’s new state-of-the-art forensic science laboratory - in just three weeks.

Overview

Dundee’s new £23.2 million forensic science facility features the latest state-ofthe-art crime fighting technology, including biology, drug and chemistry laboratories, fingerprint and scene examination units, a DNA robot and the Scottish DNA database. Many of these services rely on the secure transfer of huge amounts of information.

Challenge

The Scottish Police Services Authority required a secure, reliable data infrastructure to connect Dundee’s Tayside Police HQ with the new forensics facility. The connection was vital to share information and needed to be built and tested within a three week timeframe. Solution CityFibre provided a highly secure, dark fibre connection between the two buildings. The Scottish Police Services Authority has full control of the fibre, and CityFibre’s unique deployment methods ensured the infrastructure was delivered and tested within the three weeks. Dundee’s forensic facility can now reliably access the SPSA’s messaging and telephony services and utilise other services such as video conferencing. As sole users of the link, complete security is guaranteed and the organisation has the flexibility to control and use the fibre as it wants, now and in the future.

“Security, performance and control are the main reasons we chose a dark fibre link. It’s our equipment at either end and we connect it and determine what runs over it - there are no limitations with dark fibre. That level of control and the fact that the only active devices are the ones that we connect is good to know.” David Flavell, Regional Technical Services Manager, East SPSA
