Scottish Affairs Select Committee backs call for a review of "fibre" advertising

23 July 2018

Welcoming the Scottish Affairs Select Committee’s support for a change in the rules on "fibre" advertising, Mark Collins, Director of Strategy at CityFibre said: “Getting full fibre delivered across the UK quickly and efficiently is vital for the success of our digital economy. While the UK Government’s Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review, published early today, sets out the importance of getting the supply side of the market right, more needs to be done to ensure consumers can enjoy the full benefits. “We therefore welcome the Scottish Affairs Select Committee’s recommendation, also published today, that the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) should revisit its ruling on how fibre is used in broadband advertising so that customers know exactly what they are paying for. This is critical if they are to make an informed choice, especially now that full fibre is to become more widely available to consumers. “With increasingly broad support for a change to the rules, now is the time for the ASA to review its decision voluntarily, rather than waiting to be forced to in the Courts.”
