Italian regulator drives change in advertising rules - when will the ASA?

18 July 2018

Commenting on the Italian communication regulator’s move to change the rules on broadband advertising, CityFibre CEO Greg Mesch said: “We applaud the Italian regulator’s decision to make fibre broadband adverts crystal clear. By introducing a new mechanism that forces providers to distinguish between full and part fibre services, consumers will be able see at a glance what service is on offer. “This move highlights exactly why the UK is continuing to fall further behind its European neighbours on digital infrastructure: we aren’t creating the right climate for investment or take up of new services. The Advertising Standards Authority in the UK is an analogue regulator in a digital world – its current guidelines are no longer fit for purpose and must be changed to put an end to copper masquerading as fibre.” CityFibre is currently challenging the ASA's decision not to change the rules on how "fibre" is used in broadband adverts in Court and expects the Judicial Review to be heard in autumn.
