Newcastle’s digital revolution is gathering pace as the first homes are connected to next generation full fibre network.
Newcastle’s digital transformation has reached another milestone now that the first residents have connected to its new gigabit-capable full fibre network. With homes and businesses now starting to benefit from full fibre broadband, the city has moved one step closer to saying goodbye to its capacity-constrained copper network and bringing in the full-fibre future.
CityFibre is investing £69m to bring the fastest and most reliable digital connectivity to the city. Swift progress has been made since construction work began on the citywide roll-out in 2019, and, once complete, the network will be within reach of almost every home and property in Newcastle. The project is set to reach completion in 2023.
The network is now completed in parts of Gosforth, Kenton, Fawdon, Blakelaw and Fenham and the first customers are now live using gigabit-speed consumer broadband provided by, Zen Internet, the first ISP to offer services on Newcastle’s CityFibre network.
Jason Mirza, the first resident to sign-up for Zen’s gigabit-speed broadband said: “I’ve probably got the fastest broadband in Newcastle and I love it.
“When I first heard CityFibre were building a new broadband network across the City, I couldn’t wait, I registered my interest on the CityFibre website and even sent a few emails just to ask about when it might be coming. I talked to the engineers when they were building the fibre optic network last year and knew it was only a matter of time. When Zen launched their broadband service in January, I couldn’t believe it when they said I was going to be the first customer.”
Jason Legget, City Manager at CityFibre said: “I was so pleased for Mr Mirza when I heard he was going to be Zen’s first customer, he had registered his interest on our website last year and I knew he was keen to experience the Full Fibre service. As we’ve seen from all the customers that have signed up since we went live with Zen in January, people just can’t believe how much faster it is both for download and upload, so its brilliant for Zoom, gaming or binging on Netflix.”
Elswick, Arthur’s Hill and Walker are set to be the next areas of the city to benefit from the roll-out and an increasing number of other internet service providers including TalkTalk are set to join the network soon, giving customers a range of options.
As progress continues, CityFibre is committed to keeping local businesses and residents fully up to date on plans for each community, as well as highlighting the benefits that access to full fibre will bring to all.
