With construction of High Wycombe’s full fibre network well underway, CityFibre, the UK’s largest independent full fibre platform, recently welcomed Steve Baker MP for Wycombe for a tour of the works, giving him a closer look at the £23m town-wide project.

During the visit, representatives from CityFibre introduced Steve to the full fibre digital infrastructure, the best network technology currently available, and provided demonstrations of the typical build process, including excavation and reinstatement.

Unlike the majority of the digital infrastructure accessible to households today, full fibre networks use 100% fibre optic cables to carry data at high speed all the way from the home to the point of connection. This gives users consistently faster speeds for upload and download (up to 1,000 Mbps), near limitless bandwidth and connectivity users can depend on.

A full fibre connection also goes far beyond simply enabling access to the latest entertainment at lightning speed. As an essential digital utility, full fibre boosts households and businesses alike, with experts saying it will drive a range of economic benefits, such as making us more productive and innovative.

Speaking of the tour, Neil Madle, CityFibre’s Area Manager for High Wycombe, said: “It’s great to see such enthusiasm and excitement for our full fibre network build, as we modernise the digital infrastructure beneath the streets of High Wycombe. This is the start of an exciting new chapter for the town as it gets ready to thrive in the data age and we are delighted to show the local MP our progress to date.

“For residents of High Wycombe, it’s also important to remember that any short-term disruption will pay off tremendously in the long-term – once the network’s built, it will serve the community’s digital connectivity needs for decades to come.”

Commenting on the progress of CityFibre’s £23m project, Steve Baker MP for Wycombe said: “It was fantastic to see firsthand the work CityFibre is doing to bring full fibre to High Wycombe. This £23m investment in future-proof digital infrastructure will bring huge benefits to our town, unlocking the potential of local businesses and lifting our local economy.

“I'm delighted the project is now underway and look forward to seeing the progress made to connect local people and businesses across the town.”

Construction is being delivered by Instalcom on behalf of CityFibre. The team is using a range of construction methods while working in close partnership with Buckinghamshire Council and local communities to deliver a fast rollout while managing potential disruption.

As the network is completed in each neighbourhood, CityFibre will designate the homes ‘ready for service’, which means residents can choose to connect to full fibre-enabled broadband services when they go live in their area.

Across the UK, CityFibre is working with launch partner Vodafone to deliver next generation broadband services, as well as TalkTalk, Giganet, Zen and IDNet, with others expected to join the network soon.
