CityFibre introduces Ruth Edwards MP to Full Fibre works transforming Nottingham’s digital connectivity   

CityFibre, the UK’s largest independent carrier-neutral Full Fibre platform, recently welcomed Ruth Edwards, MP for Rushcliffe, for a tour of the works across Nottingham, giving her a closer look at the £117m project.   

During the visit, representatives from CityFibre and build partner McCann introduced Ms Edwards to Full Fibre digital infrastructure, the best network technology currently available, and provided her with demonstrations of the typical build process, including excavation and reinstatement.   

Unlike the majority of the digital infrastructure accessible to households today, Full Fibre networks use 100% fibre optic cables to carry data at light speed all the way from the home to the point of connection. This gives users consistently faster speeds for upload and download (up to 1,000 Mbps), near-limitless bandwidth, and connectivity users can depend on.    

A Full Fibre connection also goes far beyond simply enabling access to the latest entertainment at lightning speed. As an essential digital utility, Full Fibre boosts households and businesses alike, with experts saying it will drive a range of economic benefits, such as making us more productive and innovative.   

Dominika Walker, Area Manager at CityFibre, said: “Our ambition is to bolster UK towns and cities by delivering a state-of-the-art network that will future-proof their digital foundations. According to recent Hatch research, in Nottingham alone, our Full Fibre network is expected to unlock £660 million in productivity and innovation, as well as delivering a £432 million increase in house value.”

Commenting on the progress of CityFibre’s £117m project, Ruth Edwards, MP for Rushcliffe said: "Fast and reliable broadband is essential for businesses, schools and families to make the most of opportunities online, which is why the Government has committed to getting gigabit-capable speeds to 85% of the country in the next 3 years.

I was delighted to visit CityFibre last week to see the progress they have made in rolling out their network across Rushcliffe and Nottingham. The work so far is already a real step forward for Rushcliffe. The economic benefits of the infrastructure updates are vast, and we look forward to making the most of our improved connectivity."  

Construction is being delivered by McCann Ltd on behalf of CityFibre. So far, over 110km of Full Fibre infrastructure has been laid by the team, using a range of construction methods while working in close partnership with Nottingham City Council and local communities to deliver a fast rollout while managing potential disruption.   

As the network is completed in each neighbourhood, CityFibre will designate the homes ‘ready for service’, which means residents can choose to connect to Full Fibre-enabled broadband services when they go live in their area.   

In Nottingham, Gigabit-capable services are currently available from Vodafone, TalkTalk, Zen, Air Broadband, Gigabit Networks, Giganet, Trunk, IDNet, Hartlepower, Marstons and Yayzi, with others expected to join the network soon.
