CityFibre introduces Jason McCartney MP to Full Fibre works transforming Huddersfield’s digital connectivity

With construction of Huddersfield’s full fibre network well underway in the town, CityFibre, the UK’s largest independent full fibre platform, recently welcomed Jason McCartney, MP for Colne Valley, for a tour of the works, giving him a closer look at the £30m project.

During the visit, Mr McCartney met representatives from CityFibre and was introduced to full fibre digital infrastructure, the best network technology currently available, and provided with demonstrations of the typical build process, including excavation and reinstatement.

The project forms part of CityFibre’s up to £4 billion Gigabit City Investment Programme which will bring full fibre networks within reach of up to 8 million homes and businesses across the UK.

Unlike the majority of the digital infrastructure accessible to households today, full fibre networks use 100% fibre optic cables to carry data at light speed all the way from the home to the point of connection. This gives users consistently faster speeds for upload and download (up to 1,000 Mbps), near limitless bandwidth and connectivity users can depend on.

According to recent Hatch research, in Kirklees alone, our full fibre network is expected to unlock £132 million in productivity and innovation, as well as delivering an £83 million increase in house value.

“Huddersfield is an essential part of our vision for Yorkshire and with more new addresses going live day by day as work to extend the network continues through the town, we can’t wait to get more and more residents onboard.”

Commenting on the progress of CityFibre’s £30m project, Jason McCartney MP for the Colne Valley, said: “It was great to meet the team and get a first-hand look at what has become such an important project within the town and a major step forward for Huddersfield. We’re now well on our way towards becoming one of the best-connected towns in the UK and the outlook is incredibly promising for our economic, social and smart city ambitions.”

Construction is being delivered by MAP Group (UK) on behalf of CityFibre. The team is using a range of construction methods while working in close partnership with Kirklees Council and local communities to deliver a fast rollout while minimising potential disruption.

As the network is completed in each neighbourhood, CityFibre will designate the homes ‘ready for service’, which means residents can choose to connect to full fibre-enabled broadband services when they go live in their area.

In Huddersfield, services are available from an increasing range of broadband providers, including Giganet, Pure Broadband, Quickline, TalkTalk, Vodafone and Zen.
