As CityFibre’s network build turns two in Dundee, the UK’s largest independent full fibre platform has now laid a staggering 350km of full fibre internet beneath its streets.

CityFibre’s £40m investment to future-proof the city’s digital connectivity means there is enough full fibre cabling connecting the city’s homes to travel almost double the length of the River Tay, which at 193km, is Scotland’s longest river.

Allan McEwan, CityFibre’s Area Manager for Dundee, said: “The last two years we have been working to bring our full fibre network to Dundee and, with our infrastructure being placed underground, it can be difficult to get a true idea of the scale of the build. However, the idea that our fibre cabling could now stretch almost double the length of the River Tay gives some idea of the amount of work now complete.

“We are pleased that many communities across Dundee are now enjoying the benefits of our network and want to thank them for their support over the last two years. Our team continues to work hard to rollout to even more of the city.”

Dundee is among a growing number of locations in the UK to benefit from CityFibre’s nationwide full fibre rollout, which will bring new and improved broadband infrastructure within reach of up to eight million UK homes and businesses.

CityFibre’s build partner GCU UK Ltd, is working in various locations across the city, with construction currently ongoing in the Claverhouse, Fintry, Stannergate and Whitfield areas.  Work has been completed across large sections of the city including Ardler, Balgowan, Brackens, Charleston, Downfield, Dryburgh, Fairmuir, Gowrie Park, Kirkton, Law, Maryfield, Menzieshill, St Mary’s, West End and Woodside areas, with more to follow shortly.

As work is completed in each neighbourhood, CityFibre will make the homes ‘ready for service’, which means residents can choose to connect to full fibre-enabled broadband services when they go live in their area.

In Dundee, customers can sign up to Fibrecast and TalkTalk, both offering download speeds of up to 900Mbps, more than ten times faster than the UK average. Other providers, including CityFibre’s launch partner Vodafone, are expected to join the local network soon.
