CityFibre continues full fibre upgrade of Eastbourne as rollout moves into new areas

Aberdonians get glimpse of digital future as city leaders help shape CityFibre’s Gigabit vision #

Leading figures from across Aberdeen have been given a glimpse of the potential offered by full fibre digital infrastructure – as construction work on the city-wide network gathers pace.
CityFibre is investing £40m into Aberdeen as part of a commitment to bring the gold-standard connectivity to cities up and down the UK. Working in partnership with Vodafone, the project will see almost every home and business able to access next-generation full fibre connectivity.
With Aberdeen the first city in Scotland to benefit from the digital transformation, city leaders came together on Tuesday to discover more about the project – and give their input on how it can successfully unlock Aberdeen’s digital future.
Joined by representatives of Aberdeen City Council and Vodafone, CityFibre updated guests on the progress being made in the project and what the ultrafast network will help deliver for the city – from greater innovation and productivity to increased inward investment. Vodafone also gave attendees an overview of the next generation services they will be offering to consumers from early next year.
In total, more than 50 stakeholders – including key council officers, elected members, business leaders, economic development groups and figures from the education, health and property sectors – were present at the special event at The Chester Hotel in Aberdeen’s West End.
Allan McEwan, CityFibre’s City Development Manager for Aberdeen, said: “The network we are building is something that will benefit the entire city, from the biggest of businesses to the smallest of households. Full fibre will change the way we work, learn and play and for Aberdeen to be at the forefront of this digital future is something worth celebrating.
Guests at the event heard from Councillor Douglas Lumsden, co-leader of Aberdeen City Council and a strong proponent of the ‘fibre to the premises’ project in the Granite City.
Cllr Douglas Lumsden, Co-Leader of Aberdeen City Council, said: “Aberdeen has been chosen as Scotland’s first Gigabit City because of the city’s emergent tech sector and Aberdeen City Council’s support for both the project and the wider smart city initiatives. That support is underpinned by a compelling economic argument and business benefits as well as the equally important positive social impacts that vastly improved connectivity will bring to residents of Aberdeen. It is fantastic to see the build programme underway and progressing well.”
Vodafone will use CityFibre’s network to bring Vodafone Gigafast Broadband to residential customers in Aberdeen.
