Putting Gigabit connectivity in the reach of SMEs

There is little doubt that the growth and prosperity of small and medium-sized businesses in the UK has been stifled for some time by slow and unreliable connectivity.

Our economy is increasingly being driven by digital innovation, yet many SMEs see Ethernet and other business boosting full fibre solutions as too costly an option to consider.

The national picture painted by Ofcom also makes stark reading - its latest figures highlight that only 6% of the country can currently access full fibre technology, meaning these solutions are often seen by SMEs as beyond their reach too!

We’re already well on with our work as the primary agent of much needed change in the sector - we recently announced the first £1.12bn of an ambitious £2.5bn investment plan, identifying 37 towns and cities where we already have critical fibre spine assets primed for full city expansion. Our rollout will deliver to five million premises or one third of the Government’s 2025 target of 15 million!

The end game is massive for the UK, as a 2018 report into the economic impact of full fibre infrastructure over 15 years in 100 towns and cities by Regeneris which was commissioned by CityFibre highlights.

Some of the headline figures include:

  • £2.35bn boost in business innovation
  • £2.29bn growth in business start-ups
  • £2.21bn generated in increased business productivity

Even better news for SMEs is that we have aligned our CityFibre products and network focus with the advantages of the Government’s Gigabit Voucher Scheme. We worked closely with Government to help develop the scheme and so far our work has achieved almost £600,000 of savings for end user customers.
