Broadband users across the north of Leicester are now able to access some of the fastest and most reliable internet services available in the UK, thanks to a new full fibre network being laid by CityFibre.

The UK’s largest independent full fibre platform has completed its rollout in most of the north of the city and over 100,000 homes have been designated ‘ready for service.’ This means residents can now choose to connect to the fastest and most reliable internet services in the UK when they go live in their area.

This latest update marks another milestone in CityFibre’s £80m project, which aims to future-proof Leicester by ensuring its communications networks are able to support growing data consumption in an increasingly online world.

Speaking of the project, Charles Kitchin, CityFibre’s Partnership Manager for Leicester, said: “We are really pleased to be offering people in Leicester all the benefits full fibre connectivity has to offer, and we would like to thank the residents in the area who have been extremely patient with us as we have built our infrastructure.

“The build is currently ongoing in the Wigston area of the city, and we’ll be moving into Braunstone and Glen Pava over the coming months. We look forward to expanding and offering more people the opportunity to connect to our network, unlocking unbeatable homeworking, home learning and digital entertainment experiences.”

Full fibre networks use 100% fibre optics to carry data at light speed all the way from the home to the point of connection. This gives users speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps for upload and download, near limitless bandwidth and reliable connectivity.

In Leicester, customers can already connect to the new network and benefit from full fibre-enabled broadband from a choice of providers, including UK launch partner, Vodafone, on selected Vodafone Pro Broadband plans, and 13 other ISPs. Other providers are expected to join the network soon.

Granemore is delivering the construction on CityFibre’s behalf with a workforce that has been recruited locally. CityFibre’s aim is for the build to be substantially completed in Leicester by the end of 2024, which will see over 180,000 with access to the network.
